Subcommittee on Security in Industrial Communication and Embedded Systems

Chairs:
Thilo Sauter, Danube University, Austria
Adriano Valenzano, National Research Council of Italy, Turin, Italy

Scope: The technical scope of the “security in Industrial and Factory Automation” sub-committee of TCFA includes all security issues related to ICT technologies in the context of industrial and factory automation. These issues include, and are not limited to:
Security objectives and requirements in industrial and factory automation; Embedded systems security; Secure industrial communication systems; Critical infrastructure security; Process surveillance; Risk and vulnerability analysis and assessment; Cryptography; Security protocols; Remote access; Security standards; Industrial firewalls; Methodologies for improving security solutions.

Dr. Thilo Sauter is the Head of the Research Unit for Integrated Sensor Systems with the  Austrian Academy of Sciences.
He was a research assistant at the Institute of General Electrical Engineering (1992 to 1996), working in the area of programmable logic and analog ASIC design. Since 1996, he has been with the Institute of Computer Technology, where he was head of the center of excellence for fieldbus systems and leading the factory communications group.
He is member of the Austrian technical committee ÖVE MR65SC and delegate to the CENELEC committee TC65SC, both concerned with fieldbus standardization.
His current research interests are integrated sensor systems and communication networks in automation, with a focus on interconnection issues of fieldbus systems and IP-based networks, as well as industrial Ethernet.
Dr. Sauter received his Dipl.-Ing. and Doctorate degrees in electrical engineering from the Vienna University of Technology in 1992 and 1999, respectively.

Dr. Adriano Valenzano is Director of Research with the National Research Council of Italy (CNR). He is currently with the Institute of Electronic, Information and Communication Engineering (CNR-IEIIT), Torino, Italy, where he is responsible for researches concerning industrial computer networks and distributed systems.
He graduated magna cum laude in Electronic Engineering at Politecnico di Torino, Italy. In more than thirty years of scientific activities he has been involved in many international and Italian national research projects concerning distributed and networked industrial applications with real-time constraints.
Dr. Valenzano is the recipient of the 2013 ABB & IEEE IES Lifetime Contribution to Factory Automation Award. He has co-authored approximately 200 refereed journal and conference papers, mainly in the areas of computers and networks, industrial communications and security of industrial networks. He was awarded as the co-author of the best papers presented at IEEE WFCS 2004 and WFCS 2008. He is also the co-author of the books “Advanced Microprocessor Architectures” and “MAP and TOP Communications: Standards and Applications”, both published by Addison-Wesley Publishing Co.
Since 2007 he has been serving as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics. Adriano Valenzano is a Senior Member of the IEEE and vice-president of the Piedmont chapter of the Italian National Association for Automation (ANIPLA).
